Ultimatley the novel it's self is filled with diaster and a will to survive. As the boy and the man goes on a journey to survive, we (the reader) discover the love and passion the two have for each other. The quote I came across when discovering this is when the man says, "The one thing I can tell you is that you wont survive for yourself." Basically what this quote is saying is that without there love for each other, it will be impossible for them to go on and survive. Not to get off topic, but I think that the author of The Road put these events in the order he did, to give us a better understanding of why he still goes on. And kind of notice that when he put the scene, where he ponders about past thoughts of his wife, including the boy.
Another quote that I seen was," I've taken a new lover. He can give me what you cannot. Death is not a lover", this is saying that there is really no hope of living and that he is giving up on life. I personally think this last quote that i have choosen kind of forshadows the boys or the man death in some way. "You will not face the truth. You will not." Basically what this is saying is that the man has lost all means of survivng and has given up faith for his son. and that the "truth" is that they gone die. Which also means, THERE'S NO HOPE FOR THE WORLD ! ( I feel you Oprah ).
